What should my parents know before considering senior housing options?
There are a number of options available to seniors and it's difficult for the lay person to decide what's the best option for them. I have a template that I share with my clients where they analyze their decisions in four categories. One is the home; is a home suitable for their parents, is it comfortable for their parents, is it convenient for their parents. Then we analyze the parents’ home as are they capable of taking their own medicine or do they need someone to administer it to them. We consider transportation, can they drive, are there buses or other transportation available and we consider their community, till they have family and friends close. This methodology helps seniors and their families decide if they can continue to stay at home which is commonly called aging in place or if they need to go to an independent living community or an assisted living community..
